Disappointment and Small Awesomeness

We keep getting disappointing tomatoes in our veg boxes - not terribly surprising, given that it's the winter.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the only way to deal with a disappointing tomato is to roast it and make it into a sauce (with lots of garlic, chilli and red pepper), so today that's what we did.

Husband and friend had theirs with pasta and I had mine with courgettes and grated cheese...

Far more exciting, though, were my extremely awesome advance preparation skills.

I made bento lunches for me and for husband (mine is the silver and his is the double layer black).
Chicken karaage, various fun veggie things and rice for husband.

Good, no?

  1. dear,
I have stumbled about an old comment of you on the edd kimber website about custard cream biscuits. In this comment, you say you have a recipe for custard cream biscuits from a Mr Men cookbook. I'm a Belgian woman and I really love custard cream biscuits, but these are not commonly available in Belgium and I can't find a good, foolproof recipe neither. I was hoping you would be so kind to send me this Mr Men recipe you are referring to. Because I have been looking on the internet, but can not find it. I would be relly grateful. thank you.

    1. Hello Anonymous...

They're not really custard creams - just biscuits made with custard powder - I'll have to dig around (poss at my parents' house) to find the recipe, but I'll post it if I can lay my hands on it.

Even if they're not quite what you're looking for, they are pretty tasty.

  2. What an excellent idea to use silicone muffin cases in a bento box! Off to dig mine out and put somewhere accessible so I can do the same.

    1. Not my idea, sadly - one I pinched from more expert bentoers than me - genius, though :)
